November 2009
What a wonderful Welcome Club year we have had already! Thanks so much to all who have planned such great events so far. Everything (even cleaning up the highway) is more fun in the company of old and new friends! :) One Welcome Club program that I wanted to call special attention to this month is "Meals That Heal." This is a long-standing Welcome Club tradition, in which we support our members by sending meals to those who have recently experienced an illness, birth or death in the family, or other crisis. In my opinion, this is one of the most personal and special ways that we support our sister members. What is better than a personally delivered meal to lift your spirits during a stressful time? (Personally, I think anything tastes better when I didn't have to cook it.) However, the "Meals That Heal" program has been stretched a little thin, lately. We have had a lot of members in circumstances needing meals already this year, and the relatively small group of cooking volunteers is being overtaxed. Several participants have cooked multiple meals already (as many as four meals in the past two months), a situation which is just not sustainable for the future of the Meals That Heal program. We really could use more volunteers for this important program. Meals do not need to be gourmet – I can almost promise you that the gang from "Top Chef" will not be convening a judges' table around here any time soon. A "Healing Meal" can just be as simple as a few extra portions of what you are preparing for your own family that night. If you are pressed for time, other great "no-cook" options are a rotisserie chicken or pre-cooked spiral ham, along with a pre-packaged side dish like potato salad or a salad in a bag. If you can help us in any way with this, please contact our Meals That Heal program leader, Mary Thomas, at 868-7737 or Vandert5@pa.metrocast.net. Even one meal that you could contribute sometime in the next few months goes a long way towards helping us keep this program going. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! I look forward to
seeing you all at a Welcome Club event soon! :)
Thank you to everyone who attended the October
meeting. Candy's Place is a great resource for cancer patients in our
area and their families; it was nice to learn a little more about the
services they offer for patients in NEPA. The survivors who spoke were
honest, heart breaking and quite comical! Our November meeting will
be held on Thursday 11/19/2009. Please remember to RSVP by 11/16/2009
by emailing me at Kerrifey0723@aol.com
or calling 479-2739. We will have a speaker from the Fairview Township
fire hall talking about fire safety. Bring the kids since babysitting
will be available and we are hoping for a visit from one of the engines!
Below is the list from last year. If you're on the list, please let me know if you'd be willing to volunteer again this year. If you're not on the list and would like to be a volunteer for the "Mom Squad," please let me know. We can have more than one member from each neighborhood and we'd definitely like to have a representative from each neighborhood. Please let me know if I have missed any neighborhoods. Beech Mountain Lakes
Thank you Ann Papciak for the pink ribbon sugar
cookies. They were delicious. Also, thank you Mary Kate Finney for donating
the Breast Cancer Awareness themed door prize.
The 09-10 Membership Directory is being updated and should be ready during this month. Again, the pdf version will be available first, with the printed version following shortly after. The electronic version will be automatically provided to members who have provided their email addresses (printed copies will be available to members who request one). So, if you haven't already, please remember to get your dues in as soon as possible in order to be included in the directory! We also had some correspondence in Oct., as well. Get Well cards were recently sent to Diane Keating and Kerri Fey. Please let me know if there are any members in need of a card for a birth, get well, condolences, or even a thinking-of-you. Hoping you all have a very Happy Thanksgiving!
Please contact the committee members listed above
for more information.
Please contact me if you have any club expenses.
Also, please pay membership dues ASAP! We would like to have all our
members' information and dues paid so we can get the Directory out soon.
Thanks to everyone who has already paid in a timely fashion!
ANGEL TREE – The Food Bank at St. Paul's Church will provide the Welcome Club with a list of children whose parents could use extra help with Christmas gifts. Each tag will include the child's gender, age, clothing size and interests. Tags will be available at the November General Meeting. If you are unable to attend the meeting, but would like a tag please let me know. WHITE HAVEN CENTER – Once again we will collect presents for the residents of White Haven Center. I will provide everyone with a list of items. This is a great opportunity to "re-gift." HIGHWAY CLEAN UP – We had an awesome turnout! We were eleven strong and finished in one hour. We were able to collect 25 bags of garbage along our stretch of Route 309. Thank you to the following ladies who helped: Elaine Bernstein, Susan Hagenbuch, Liz Shipton, Cypress La Salle, Mary Thomas, Beth LaMarca, Liz Barley, Kate Blazick, Amy Wagoner and Pam McGovern. Also, thanks to Mary Kate Finney for providing babysitting! FIRE DEPARTMENT BAKING/SNACK – Thanks to Eggie Young, Ann Papciak and Pam McGovern who volunteered for October. I still have a few openings. Contact me if you have an interest. HATS & MITTENS COLLECTION – Thanks to all who contributed! I will be delivering the items to St. Paul's on Friday, 10/30. Please contact me if you'd still like to donate.
As Publicity/ Historian,
I'm looking for photos of all events such as playgroups and fieldtrips,
dinner clubs, special events, adopt-a-highway, picnics, children's parties
and any other events pertaining to our Welcome Club. I need your help
to cover all of our special interest groups. These photos will also
be used for our President's album at the end of her term. Please send
me any photos you would like published and I will send them to the newspapers.
Make sure to label all participants featured in the photo. My email
address is Kgnfakp@aol.com. Any
pictures from the welcome club picnic would be appreciated.
After soliciting suggestions, it was mentioned to
me that at one time the newsletter was sent out on the 25th of each
month, with the submissions due on the 20th. I think that this may be
a great plan, given that some of the various group activities are often
scheduled for early in the month. This publishing date will allow for
more advance planning for our members. If there are any other suggestions
for better service, please feel free to let me know! Thanks!
Please contact Mary if anyone needs this service, which provides meals to members experiencing an illness, birth or death in the family.
